Risky Business

Too much testosterone and too little oxytocin also make young men society’s greatest risk takers, such as high-risk investments. A famous example that Dr. Paul Zak uses in The Moral Molecule to illustrate this is the Donner party wagon train back in the 1800s. The men in the party chose to stake their fortunes on an unproven shortcut. As many people know, that supposedly quicker route got them into the Sierra Mountains later in the season than advisable, which got them stuck in the snow of what we now call Donner Pass. About half of them died and the others had to turn to cannibalism to survive. Records of personal accounts show that the women in the Donner Party had been strongly opposed to taking the unproven trail.

Oftentimes, indeed, mother knows best. Women are more risk averse in many areas of life. Research shows that they carry more life insurance, are safer drivers, and prefer to invest their retirement funds more conservatively than men. This, once again, reflects the higher level of oxytocin and lower level of testosterone.
